Munich/Beijing. In 2023, the BMW Group showcased its systematic strength in the highly challenging Chinese market. The Group delivered an impressive 824,932 BMW and MINI vehicles in the Chinese mainland market (+4.2%). Notably, sales of BMW all-electric models were the main drivers of growth, with annual BEV deliveries reaching nearly 100,000 units.

"New competitors, products and technologies created an intensely competitive Chinese automotive market in 2023. Supported by the outstanding efforts of our suppliers and dealer partners, BMW Group retained its leading position in the Chinese premium segment, whilst delivering strong results in the luxury segments and successfully transitioning our product portfolio to intelligent, electric mobility”, said Sean Green, President and CEO of BMW Group Region China.

In 2023, sales of all-electric BMWs totaled 99,972 units, representing a year-on-year increase of more than 138%. Among the six BMW all-electric models available in the Chinese market, the BMW i3 and BMW iX3 were the top sellers in 2023. As a sign of things to come, BMW BEV deliveries exceeded 10,000 units per month in both November and December 2023. The first-ever BMW i5 – the first fully-electric version of BMW’s most successful model in China – will be launched this month. At which point, the brand will have BEV offerings in nearly all core segments in which it operates.

In the new mobility era, digital intelligence is a crucial factor to attract consumers. To better and more swiftly meet the digital needs of Chinese customers, the BMW Group further upgraded its China research and development system in 2023 and is focused on leveraging Chinese expertise to advance its digital competency. For example, the BMW Group recently received its test license for L3 automated driving on highways in China. The Group is committed to developing automated driving systems with the highest safety standards, with the aim of enabling L3 automated driving functionality on its vehicles in the Chinese market at the right time.

With the noticeable impact of climate change, rise of the green economy and the popularity of sustainability concepts, consumers are increasingly engaged on environmental issues. The BMW Group believes that relying solely on electric vehicles to reduce carbon emissions is not enough. Instead, achieving truly green mobility will require carbon reduction across the entire industry chain and the creation of a circular economy. Already, the manufacturing processes of all BMW fully electric vehicles are powered by 100% renewable electricity. Meanwhile, the raw materials of batteries from all electric BMW models, will be recycled in a closed-loop process once retired, thereby reducing the environment impact caused by obsolete batteries.

As China's NEV market booms, there is a crucial need for the further expansion of charging infrastructure. As of the end of 2023, BMW customers can access more than 580,000 public charging points in more than 320 cities in China. In August 2023, BMW launched the BMW Super Charging Station project, with high-power charging stations supporting up to 600 kW charging power and open to all brands of electric vehicles. 50 stations have already been rolled out, covering 17 first- and second-tier cities in China.

In the global market, the BMW Group delivered 2,555,341 units of BMW, MINI, and Rolls-Royce vehicles in 2023. Among them, a total of 2,253,835 BMW vehicles were delivered to customers worldwide, maintaining its leading position in the global premium segment last year. Sales of BMW all-electric vehicles increased 92.2% year-on-year, reaching 330,596 units.
