Munich/Beijing. Focusing on the strategic areas of “electrification, digitalization and circularity”, the BMW Group demonstrated strong resilience together with its partners in China to overcome a challenging environment in 2022 and achieve good business results. The BMW Group delivered 791,985 BMW and MINI vehicles to Chinese customers in 2022, with sales of fully electric models increasing by 91.6% year-on-year.

“2022 has been a volatile and challenging year for our industry. Strongly supported by exceptional efforts from our dealers and supplier partners, BMW China demonstrated remarkable resilience and managed to deliver solid business results as well as to further expand our footprint in the Chinese market”, said Jochen Goller, President & CEO of BMW Group Region China. “In 2022 the sales of our fully electric vehicles grew by more than 90% versus previous year. And this is only the beginning: In 2023, BMW is going full power on electrification, offering 11 compelling BEVs to our Chinese customers as well as preparing for the arrival of the NEUE KLASSE in 2025.”

In 2022, the BMW Group offered five fully electric models in the Chinese market, including: the first-ever BMW i7, all-new BMW i3, BMW i4, BMW iX and BMW iX3. Full-year sales of battery electric models amounted to 41,886 units, an increase of 91.6% year-on-year. The all-new BMW i3 has gained popularity among Chinese customers since its launch at the end of March 2022. Despite the impact of supply chain and pandemic-related disruptions during its ramp-up phase, 13,310 units were delivered by the end of 2022.

In 2023, the BMW Group will present more compelling battery electric vehicles in the Chinese market, including the first-ever BMW iX1, the Rolls-Royce SPECTRE, and the BMW CE04 from BMW Motorrad. BMW will have the most comprehensive battery electric product line-up among the premium brands, covering almost all market segments. To support the rapid growth of BEVs, BMW announced an investment of around 10 billion RMB to expand battery production capacity at its Shenyang production base in November 2022.

The BMW Group is committed to a future that is electric, digital and circular. The company shared its vision of the fusion of digital experience with sheer driving pleasure on the BMW i Vision Dee at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) 2023 in Las Vegas. The new Concept vehicle provides a glimpse of the NEUE KLASSE, which will be the next big leap for BMW e-mobility coming in 2025.

Digitalization also plays an essential role in BMW’s advanced production system. The BMW iFACTORY production strategy is being implemented in China. It applies data science, artificial intelligence and virtualization technologies to improve production efficiency and quality, as well as save energy and reduce emissions.

In addition to the impressive sales performance of BMW’s battery electric vehicles in 2022, the new BMW X5 maintained strong growth momentum in the segment. Sales of the locally produced BMW X5 exceeded 50,000 units since its launch in March 2022. Sales of BMW M family increased by 43.7% year-on-year, while the MINI brand delivered 28,746 units in China. BMW Motorrad sold 15,404 units in 2022, up by 7.7% year-on-year.

The BMW Group delivered 2,399,636 BMW, MINI and Rolls-Royce to customers worldwide in 2022. The BMW brand sold 2,100,692 units last year and maintained its No. 1 position in the global premium segment. The Group was able to more than double its BEV sales from 2021 (+107.7%) with a total of 215,755 fully electric BMW and MINI vehicles.
