Leading the Sustainable Development of the Auto Industry
BMW Brilliance Nominated "UNGC China Network Best Enterprise Practices" for Three Consecutive Years

Mar 1, 2022

(Beijing, March 1st) A few days ago, the United Nations Global Compact Network China (UCNC) officially released the 2021 list of “UNGC China Network Best Enterprise Practices” award. For the third year in a row, BMW Brilliance Automotive Ltd. (BMW Brilliance) received the award thanks to its exploration, practice and superior performance in the field of sustainable development—the one and only auto manufacturer on the 2021 winners’ list. This not only cements BMW Brilliance’s position as a pioneer and leader in sustainable development, but also demonstrates its firm commitment to contribute long-term to Chinese society and promote the realization of the “30·60” decarbonization goals.

United Nations Global Compact (UNGC) is affiliated with the United Nations Secretariat. It is the world's largest international organization to promote the sustainable development of enterprises, and UNGC Network China is its authorized regional network in China. For years, UNGC Network China has been actively encouraging Chinese enterprises to take action to support the realization of the UN SDGs through events such as the “UNGC China Network Best Enterprise Practices”.

Dr. Wieland, President and CEO of BMW Brilliance, pointed out: “In 2021, BMW Brilliance produced more than 700,000 BMW vehicles and became - for the first time - the largest producer of premium cars in China. But, BMW Brilliance is also demonstrating what high-quality development is about: high-quality development is a sustainable development. BMW Brilliance uses technological innovations to achieve an innovation-driven, green development. We are very proud that BMW Brilliance's outstanding sustainable development governance has been highly recognized by the United Nations and the Chinese government, contributing to the high-quality development of Chinese society.”

BMW Brilliance is not only stepping up efforts to explore ways to reduce carbon emissions in product design and production, but also to incorporate the concept of sustainability into the entire value chain. Through providing innovative solutions in R&D, manufacturing, supply chain, logistics, sales, and other key areas, BMW Brilliance reduces the carbon footprint of the entire value chain, driving the auto industry’s low-carbon transition and contributing to the realization of the 14th Five-Year Plan’s sustainable development goals.

At the R&D stage, BMW Brilliance as BMW Group’s largest new energy vehicle research and development network outside of Germany actively implements the low-carbon concept, and has made progress in battery recycling, efficient driving (with BMW Efficient Dynamics), lightweight, and improvement of internal combustion engines’ efficiency and range. At the same time, BMW Brilliance runs lifecycle assessments (LCAs) according to ISO 14040/44 standards to reduce its carbon footprint. In 2020, BMW Brilliance conducted the first lifecycle assessment for the BMW 530Li xDrive.

In manufacturing, BMW Brilliance holds its production processes to the high standards of "National Green Plant", and reduces its carbon emissions by improving its energy management system, optimizing energy infrastructure and continuously improving production processes. BMW Brilliance has switched to 100% percent renewable energy at our Shenyang production base since the end of 2019. In 2020, BMW Brilliance lowered its CO2 emissions per vehicle produced to 0.18 tons/vehicle, which was a 7.5% reduction from 2019.

At the low-carbon supply chain stage, BMW Brilliance launched the Supply Chain Climate Change Initiative to continuously empower the supply chain's sustainable development capabilities, promote low-carbon transition of the supply chain, and make every effort to reduce carbon emissions throughout the lifecycle of automotive products. In 2021, we set up a sustainability management project team in China based on the Chinese environment and national carbon reduction commitments to formulate a Chinese supply chain emission reduction plan more scientifically.

At the logistics and warehousing stage, BMW Brilliance adheres to the green, low-carbon concept, improving green warehousing management capabilities to minimize environmental impact while continuously expanding the proportion of low-carbon transportation.

At the sales and after-sales stage, BMW strives to further improve the NEV ecosystem. In 2020, BMW hit a significant milestone with the world premiere of the first-ever all-electric BMW iX3, which marked the start of the rapid development of BMW NEVs. In 2021, BMW signed a strategic cooperation agreement with the State Grid EV Service (SGEVS) to advance both parties’ collaboration, with a plan to establish 100 integrated green energy stations with light charging and storage in the next three years.

BMW Brilliance is an active practitioner of the circular economy, attaching great importance to resource efficiency and recycling in its operations. BMW Brilliance also works hand in hand with upstream and downstream suppliers to recycle, re-manufacture and reuse raw materials and waste parts through innovative methods and technologies. In 2020, BMW Brilliance made significant progress in raw materials and batteries recycling, parts remanufacturing and green packaging.

In the future, BMW Brilliance will continue to deepen its efforts in green, low-carbon development and circularity under the guidance of BMW Group’s sustainability strategy, establish a strong foothold in China's auto industry and industrial chain, and lead the entire value chain to accomplish long-term sustainable development.
