National Green Power Trading Pilot Scheme Rolled Out
BMW Brilliance Ranks First Nationwide in
Green Power Purchase

Sep 8, 2021

(Shenyang) On September 8th, BMW Brilliance, as one of the first National Green Plants, announced that it has all at once completed a green power trading volume of 2.78 billion kWh during China’s recent debut launch of green power trading. This trade was completed through a green power trading platform with the help of Liaoning’s power trading authorities and under the guidance of the “Green Power Trading Pilot Scheme” approved by the National Development and Reform Commission and National Energy Administration. The green power purchased will fulfill most of the green power demand at BMW Brilliance’s Shenyang production base in the next four years. With this trade accounting for 35% of the nation’s total trading volume, BMW Brilliance ranks first nationwide in green power purchase.

It is understood that a total of 259 market entities from 17 provinces participated in the debut launch of green power trading, with 7.935 billion kWh of power traded in total. Among these, the volume of power traded was 6.898 billion kWh in the operating area of State Grid Corporation of China, and 1.037 billion kWh in the operating area of China Southern Power Grid. The trade is expected to reduce the burning of standard coal by 2.436 million tons and carbon dioxide emissions by 6.0718 million tons.

Dr. Johann Wieland, President and CEO of BMW Brilliance Automotive Ltd., said: “As a ‘National Green Plant’, BMW Brilliance has for a long time prioritized energy optimization to reduce overall carbon dioxide emissions. Since 2019, BMW Brilliance has been using 100% renewable energy in its production. We fully understand the importance of green power supply in optimizing energy infrastructure and reducing carbon dioxide emissions in production. As a National Green Plant, we are very proud to actively participate in the first national green power trade. On the one hand, this greatly contributes to the realization of BMW Group newly established carbon reduction target; on the other hand, we are leading by example as we take concrete actions to guide the development of the industry. Under the government’s guidance and operation of market’s mechanism, we believe that more enterprises will start using green energy and implementing green production, making tangible contributions to the realization of Chinese society’s ‘dual carbon’ target.”

Under the guidance of the National Development and Reform Commission, it is understood that State Grid Corporation of China and China Southern Power Grid have formulated a “Green Power Trading Pilot Scheme” to help achieve the Chinese government’s carbon emissions peak and carbon neutrality goals, and establish a market system and long-term mechanism conducive to the promotion of green energy production and consumption. Green power trading is based on green power products such as wind power and photovoltaics. The trading varieties established within the framework of the power market’s medium and long-term market mechanism can fully reflect the power value and environmental value of green power, and provide corresponding green power consumption certification. Launching green power trading gives full play to the market’s decisive role in optimal resource allocation, exerting influence on both supply and demand sides as well as accurately matching power generation and user needs to effectively promote new energy development, drive active green power consumption in society, fully reflect environmental value, and boost the virtuous cycle of new energy development. This is extremely significant in accelerating the construction of a new power system with new energy at its core and contributing to the realization of the ‘dual carbon’ target.

BMW Brilliance Automotive Ltd. has always placed sustainability strategy at its core. In 2020, BMW Brilliance continued to lead the sustainable development of the automotive industry, once again ranking first in the “Automotive Enterprise Green Development Index” and winning the “National Green Plant” award for the fourth consecutive year. This June, BMW Brilliance officially released the “BMW Brilliance Sustainability Report 2020”. According to the report, BMW Brilliance outstandingly achieved a 7.5% year-on-year reduction in CO2 emissions per vehicle (an 84% reduction compared with 2016) on the basis of a 12.3% year-on-year production increase in 2020. At the same time, for each vehicle produced, BMW Brilliance achieved a 7.4% reduction in energy consumption, 17.9% reduction in water consumption, and nearly 60% reduction in waste disposal volume compared with 2019.

Sustainable development has become a global agenda. BMW Brilliance is committed to implementing BMW Group’s sustainability strategy, maintaining its leading and exemplary position in the field of sustainable development in China’s automotive industry with a forward-looking perspective.
