The BMW iX3 Explores Green Nature and Helps Create a Low-Carbon Future

June 28, 2021

Ningde/Beijing. Recently, the “Driving the Future - 2021 BMW iX3 Exploration Journey” was successfully held. The new energy vehicle fleet led by the first-ever BMW iX3 completed the journey from Ningde, Fujian Province to Songyang, Zhejiang Province in high temperature and humidity. Along the journey, the fleet visited CATL, the "birthplace" of the battery cells of BMW iX3, passed through various road conditions such as city roads, highway and mountains, and finally arrived in the green mountains and clear rivers near the ancient village of Chenjiapu. The first-ever BMW iX3 demonstrated its product strength as well as its sustainable development concept, advocating its green lifestyle.

Green Luxury: Carbon Reduction Throughout Whole Value Chain

Responsibility and sustainability are essential attributes of future luxury. BMW Group has made sustainability a part of its core strategic direction. By 2030, the BMW Group plans to reduce the average carbon dioxide emissions per vehicle by at least one-third compared to 2019, including 20% in the supply chain. BMW Brilliance is committed to boosting sustainability throughout the value chain and empowering sustainable development with cutting-edge technology and innovation. Last year BMW Brilliance proposed the "Supply Chain Climate Change Initiative" to reduce supply chain carbon emissions together with its supplier partners.

The BMW iX3 also implements sustainability from the very beginning of its production design. There are no rare earths used in the electric motor; advanced and environmentally friendly technology have been implemented in the production of its batteries as well as the usage of 100% renewable energy .At the same time, BMW Brilliance is committed to using materials with higher recyclability and recoverability rate with its stringent material management system. Currently, BMW has established a comprehensive dealership high-voltage power battery recycling management process in China. BMW Brilliance has built a battery code traceability management system to track the entire life cycle from production to end-of-life recycling.

As an important partner of BMW, CATL provides the battery cells for BMW iX3 and makes important contributions to its sustainable lifecycle, such as using 100% green electricity for BMW production lines, making BMW iX3 a pure electric vehicle with a "green core".

The Fifth Generation eDrive Opens a New Era of Pure Electric Mobility

Mobility has always been a basic human need, and driving has always been the essential function of a car. For more than 100 years, BMW has been providing consumers with "sheer driving pleasure", and now the BMW iX3 extends this to a new field.

The fleet travelled from Ningde to Songyang County, passing through a full range of highways, urban and rural roads and mountain passes, demonstrating the vehicle's e-range and intelligent e-range calculation capabilities. This is made possible by the BMW Group's fifth-generation BMW eDrive system that has 93% efficiency. The BMW iX3 offers driving up to 500 km on a single charge, with an average electric power consumption of only 16.7 kWh per 100 km. At the same time, the BMW iX3's unique active recuperation offers new options for driving pleasure, offering the choice of efficient coasting in driving position D or the one pedal feeling of electric vehicles with driving position B.

During the driving process, remaining e-range is precisely calculated based on real-time energy consumption, vehicle driving mode, road conditions and navigation route. For example, while going down the mountain roads, efficient energy recuperation caused the number to increase, instead of decrease. Even in a hot and humid environment, the BMW iX3's battery pack still performs outstandingly, providing customers with sufficient e-range for their needs.

The long e-range of the BMW iX3 is also made possible by its highly efficient aerodynamic design, including aerodynamic wheels, closed surface kidney grilles, Air Curtains on both sides of the front apron, and the battery positioned flat in the vehicle floor. This helps the BMW iX3 achieve a wind resistance coefficient of just 0.29.

Human-oriented Technology: Safe, Convenient and Fun

The BMW iX3 is equipped with BMW's most advanced BMW Personal Co-Pilot, including 25 sensors, cameras and radar. Steering and Lane Control Assistant made driving easier on the highway to Songyang County. Traffic Jam Assistant made congestion in the city less stressful. Upon arrival at Chenjiapu, the Reversing Assistant and Parking Assistant Plus made driving in the narrow village roads easy.

BMW iX3 also brings surprises for customers by various Connected Drive functions, such as the upgraded BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant, wireless Apple CarPlay, and integrated applications such as Tmall Genie, QQ Music, Ximalaya and iXigua. These help the BMW iX3 to seamlessly connect with customers' digital lives and make the journey more enjoyable.

The test drive journey ended in the ancient village of Chenjiapu where people are living in harmony with nature. The test drive route wound through green mountains and river, while the quiet driving of the BMW iX3 did not disturb birds or beasts, and the zero-emission travel does not affect a single blade of grass or a tree. The BMW iX3 guarantees a quality customer experience in every aspect, while reducing its impact on the environment, which is what a true green all-electric vehicle should look like.
