(Beijing) BMW launched the new BMW 5 Series at the long-awaited Beijing Auto Show kicked off on September 26, officially making its market entry in China as a new benchmark in the segment. As an indispensable BMW model and example of premium business sedan, the BMW 5 Series enjoys a delivery volume of over 9 million in total ever since its debut in 1972. Boasting new aesthetic design, cutting-edge digital technology, superior premium features and sheer driving dynamics, the new BMW 5 Series again enhances product strength for its new generation elite customers.

A total of 17 new BMW 5 Series variants were launched at the event. Their MSRP range from 423,900 to 603,900 RMB including both long and standard wheelbase versions. Equipped with 25 high-value standard features, the LWB models tailored for Chinese customers will once again differentiate themselves as new standards in the segment.

New aesthetic design fitting with the lifestyle of modern elites

The new BMW 5 Series brings together the essence of its design heritage with bold innovations to exude the brand’s pioneering character in a new design language. The new exterior has a modern and dynamic look with simple and sharper lines that represent a new interpretation of BMW's thrilling luxury.

The most eye-catching feature is the new Adaptive LED headlights. The new headlights with a slimmer L-shaped structure create a sense of refinement and power. The innovative BMW Laser Light brings a unique blue element. The enlarged kidney grille visually raises the front end, giving the car a more confident presence.

The double waistlines run through both sides of the car. The air outlets adopt a dynamic sloping design, further optimizing aerodynamics. The rear end expresses modern luxury to the fullest. Black edging lends a slimmer, more focused twist to the three-dimensional LED rear lights. The China-only M Sport Package aluminium rear diffuser and the new M Sport Package 18/19-inch rims add to the vehicle’s sporty identity. The exterior paintwork of Phytonic Blue metallic and Piemont Red metallic renders the car expressive, dynamic and elegant.

The LWB model offers new, extremely appealing Luxury Line and M Sport Package for customers to choose from. The Luxury Line is more distinguished and elegant, while M Sport Package highlights the thrilling luxury as a layered addition to visual experience. For the first time M Sport Package is available in the new BMW 5 Series Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle, highlighting the ever-progressing identity for this premium business sedan.

In addition, the new BMW 5 Series SWB variant will be available in a series of exclusive exterior designs and paints to create a distinctive appearance on top of sheer driving pleasure. They include the black grille frame, black tailpipes, red M Sport brake callipers, the new M Sport Package 19-inch darkened rims, the unique Bernina Grey Amber and new customized matte black, Aventurine Red and Oxford Green Metallic.

Innovative technology ushers in new digital driving experience

Equipped with leading intelligence, the new BMW 5 Series Li gives a full demonstration to BMW’s innovation in connectivity. The more high-tech driving experience can satisfy customers who always stay connected.

The interior of the car follows BMW’s signature driver-centric layout with a clear division of function display. The most notable change is to the central touchscreen display, which is now enlarged from 10.25 to 12.3 inches with better and more comfortable visual effects. The iDrive 7.0 Operation System allows customers to interact with the car via the iDrive controller, physical buttons on the steering wheel, touch screen, voice command and gesture control. This enables a varied and personalized interaction with the vehicle, as well as a vast variety of new digital features inside the cabin.

The “BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant” is upgraded with new graphics and sound effects and higher conversational capability. It can open and close the car’s windows partially or fully, or adjust the air conditioning with higher degree of liberty. For example, customers can say “turn on the air-con at my feet” to the BMW IPA. The new chitchat function allows customers to make small talk with it. The BMW IPA is also compatible with other smart voice devices such as the Tmall Genie launched in November 2019. Via this voice assistant, customers can enjoy online music, control connected devices at homes and order a cup of Starbucks, among others. Moreover, customers can use the BMW IPA now to make restaurant reservations, set reminders & memos and turn on the air purification function via voice command. In addition, they can also listen to the music on QQ Music and stories from Ximalaya, and watch short videos on iXigua short video while waiting at red lights or taking a brief rest.

Another feature on the new BMW 5 Series Li is the first-of-its-kind “Indoor Parking”, which gives customers a clear overview of underground parking lots. It displays parking spaces and other points of interest such as entrance/exit, elevator, toilet, etc. Customers can plan their parking in advance according to their own needs and no longer have to worry about getting lost. For now, this function is available at nearly 100 parking lots in Beijing and Shanghai.

The new BMW 5 Series Li is also the first model to support the new generation BMW Digital Key for iPhone and Apple Watch under the latest Car Connectivity Consortium (CCC) standard. This enables customers to unlock/lock the car and easily get going by placing the iPhone in the smartphone tray and pushing the start button. Supporting Apple CarPlay and Baidu CarLife as well, the new BMW 5 Series is seamlessly connected to customers’ digital life.

In addition, the new BMW 5 Series Li will also provide various functions such as Smart Parking and Flight Assistant to help customers find nearby parking lots or book flights with ease.

The new BMW 5 Series Li offers a number of exclusive features for Chinese customers. Inside the car, customers can enjoy the quietude and luxury ambience brought by the noise-reducing cabin and 11 combinations of ambient lighting; the body length of over 5 meters makes it the longest wheelbase in its segment, creating a “first class” premium space for rear passengers. All models are also equipped with luxury rear armrest as standard, with thicker seat cushions and backrests with comfortable headrests. High-end variants also offer electric rear seat adjustment; the Rear-seat CID and Rear-seat Entertainment Screen with Touch Control can control most functions other besides driving; Sky Lounge is also a unique feature in its class.

Powerful dynamics brings thrilling driving experience

The new BMW 5 Series Li is equipped with the latest BMW 2.0T four-cylinder inline engine with TwinPower Turbo with eight-speed Steptronic transmission. The new BMW 530Li xDrive has a maximum output of 185 kW, a peak torque of 350 Nm and 0-100 km/h acceleration of 6.8 seconds. The three driving modes—SPORT, COMFORT and ECO PRO—enables customers to switch between different power output and acceleration at will. This can also be realized by the voice-activated BMW IPA at customers’ service all the time.

In addition, the lightweight, rigid body brings bigger manoeuvrability to the new BMW 5 Series Li, while at the same time significantly improving the vehicle's thrust-to-weight ratio to generate more powerful acceleration. The intelligent, drag-reducing grille improves the engine's thermal efficiency to ensure good engine operation.

The new BMW 5 Series Li also comes with advanced automated driving technology, creating a higher level of intelligence and convenience during driving. For example, Parking Assistant Plus includes 3D Remote View, Top View 360° as well as Reverse Tracking Assist, which allows the vehicle to reverse the last 50 meters travelled along its original path even in tight spaces. Driving Assistant Professional offers Traffic Jam Assistant, by which the vehicle can automatically keep up with traffic under 60 km/h, while cameras, radar and ultrasonic sensors around the body monitor road conditions in real time to ensure safe driving.

At the same time, the tail badge of the new BMW 5 Series PHEV has been upgraded to “535Le”, making it the most intelligent and premium representative of the 5 Series family. The new car is equipped with the latest BMW 2.0T four-cylinder inline engine and the latest eDrive technology, with the maximum output increased to 215 kW, combined torque up to 420 Nm, accelerating from a standstill to 100 km/h in 6.7 seconds. Compared to the previous model, the combined output of the new BMW 5 Series is 30 kW higher and the acceleration time is 0.2 seconds shorter. In terms of energy consumption, BMW's innovative battery technology equipped on the new car provides a pure electric range of up to 95 km and fuel consumption of 1.5 L per 100 km. It meets even higher environmental standards and pushes BMW's electric driving pleasure to a new height.
