2020 Auto Industry Green Development Index Released
BMW Brilliance Again Ranks No.1 in Lead of Auto Industry's Green Development

Nov 27, 2020

On December 15th, China Automotive Data Co., Ltd officially released the "2020 Green Development Index for Auto Industry", which is China's first accounting system that quantitatively evaluates automotive enterprises' green development and its information transparency. In July 2020, China Automotive Data started evaluating the transparency of 49 large-scale production companies' green development information. Following 4 months of professional collation and analysis of 8000+ pieces of information from 49 companies, the 2020 Auto Industry Green Development Index was formed. The index shows that BMW Brilliance Automotive Co., Ltd. (hereinafter referred to as "BMW Brilliance") again ranks no.1 with an index value of 92.71.

Dr. Johann Wieland, President and CEO of BMW Brilliance, stated: "The transparency of company green development information can help improve the transparency and credibility of the industry and society, and ensure that stakeholders can formulate clear and effective action plans and data-based decisions. Looking forward, BMW Brilliance will continue to fulfill its commitment to green development and work with stakeholders to play its part in China's accelerated implementation of the sustainable development goals."

Vibrant economy and cultural heritage blend seamlessly together in Jiangsu and Zhejiang provinces. Driving the First-Ever BMW iX3 and slowly immersing into the life of Jiangnan water towns will make people fall in love with zero-emission mobility.

The "Green Development Index of Auto Industry" puts promoting the green development of the auto industry at its core, and aims to guide companies in establishing a good green information transparency mechanism, setting up green risk prevention mechanisms and implementing targeted green improvements. The index evaluates auto manufacturers in three aspects: qualitative transparency, quantitative transparency, and transparency on energy conservation and environmental protection improvements. For many years, BMW Brilliance has established a complete green development information transparency system and issued its annual sustainability report for 7 consecutive years. In 2019, BMW Brilliance ranked no.1 in the first green development index assessment, and has since continued to contribute to the activation of the auto industry's sustainable development "green genes".

In 2020, BMW Brilliance's sustainability performance was included as an excellent case study in the UN Global Compact's Sustainability Development Progress Report, which is attributed to BMW Brilliance's active efforts to penetrate the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) into all areas of the value chain, and covers the deep integration of various business areas such as product life cycle, production, logistics and transport, sales and utilization, which fully reflects the social responsibility of BMW Brilliance.

Build a sustainable system for the whole product life cycle

BMW Brilliance implements the concept of sustainable development in every link of the product life cycle, from supplier quality control of raw materials, R&D and production, to the recycling and utilization of vehicle materials and defective HVBs, which covers the whole life cycle of the product and reflects the commitment of BMW Brilliance to actively promote sustainability development and green development.

BMW Brilliance strengthens collaboration with suppliers and promotes multi-level sustainable development through win-win partnerships. In 2019, all BMW Brilliance suppliers passed ISO14001 certification. Adhering to the principle of sustainable raw material procurement, we set sustainability commitments for our Tier-1 and Tier-2 suppliers of HVB Gen5 production to use 100% regenerative energy to power the battery production delivered to BMW Brilliance and increase the usage of secondary aluminum, cobalt, and nickel materials. In the R&D phase, through the implementation of the "Efficient Dynamics" strategy, BMW Brilliance has achieved the greatest possible lightening of product body weight and continued to reduce corporate average fuel consumption and CO2 emissions. The BMW 5 Series can reduce the weight of the entire vehicle by up to 130 kg, the weight of the trim cover and back panel can be reduced by 15% and 26% respectively, and the average fleet CO₂ emissions is 137.8g/km. The newly launched BMW iX3, equipped with the latest fifth-generation BMW eDrive electric drive technology, has an e-range of 500 kilometers under the NEDC standard, opening up a new era for green mobility.

At the same time, BMW Brilliance is committed to using materials with higher recyclability and recoverability rate with its stringent material management system. The average recoverability rate of all models can exceed 95%. Through the establishment of the battery tracing information system, the project to reuse, recycle and dispose of defective HVB has been running well. In 2019, the uploading rate for HVB tracing information for BMW Brilliance vehicles in the production phase got up to 100%, the construction rate of BMW Brilliance HVB recycling service outlets remained at 100%, and the number of HVB recycling service outlets increased by 49% compared to 2018. BMW Brilliance attaches great importance to the development of a circular economy and is committed to tapping the maximum utilization value of materials. In 2019, a total of 3263 HVB modules were recycled. Looking forward, BMW Brilliance will continue to improve its raw material recycling capabilities.

Leading the future with smart and green manufacturing

BMW Brilliance has successfully achieved high-quality transformation in the field of production and has become an advanced model for the practice of green and smart manufacturing. As the world's first automotive company to achieve full coverage of 5G signals, BMW's Shenyang plant is fully covered by 5G, and continues to actively explore and practice innovative applications of 5G technology. At the same time, as a national-level green plant, BMW Brilliance is using 100% renewable electricity in its Shenyang production under the framework of green production, reducing CO2 emissions during production by more than 200,000 tons and decreasing CO2 emissions per vehicle produced by 68.3% year-on-year.

Adhering to the digitalization strategy, BMW Brilliance has established an Energy Online Management System to continuously improve energy and resource efficiency. Since the system was established in 2017, it has achieved a 2.4% reduction in energy consumption per vehicle produced and a 7.2% reduction in water consumption per vehicle produced, helping its Shenyang plant to achieve emission reduction targets.

BMW Brilliance is committed to fulfilling its promise of green development. In logistics and transport, BMW Brilliance is fully promoting low-carbon transport and multi-modal transportation. BMW Brilliance further improves its green and smart logistics system by reducing air freight and optimizing railway operations. At present, 78% of BMW Brilliance's finished vehicle logistics is by rail transport, which means BMW Brilliance has the highest proportion of rail transport among Chinese automakers. Since 2014, BMW Brilliance has successfully achieved a 45% reduction in CO2 emissions from outbound logistics.

Besides, BMW Brilliance continues to urge dealers to implement end-to-end environmental compliance management, and implement inspections for overall after-sales management performance of dealers across the network through the after-sales process audit (APA) project, of which EHS-related items including environmental protection training, hazardous waste disposal etc. account for 11%. In 2019, 542 dealers were reviewed under the APA project with an average score of 86.9, an improvement compared to 2018.
