BMW China hit record high to more than 90,000 cars in 2009
Beijing. BMW Group Region China reported today that in 2009 the BMW Group delivered a total of 90,536 units (prev. yr: 65,822) BMW and MINI brand automobiles to customers in the Chinese Mainland market. Both the BMW and MINI brands closed at new records which is true for both locally produced and import models.
With the exciting development of the Chinese market, China is now the 4th largest single market for the BMW Group worldwide. BMW Brilliance Automotive also saw fast growth and delivered a total of 43,702 units locally produced BMW 3 Series and 5 Series to customers in 2009. BMW Brilliance announced its expansion plan in November 2009 to meet the increasing demands of customers.
The BMW 7 Series with an impressive sales of 16,006 units reclaimed segment leadership after a model change last year. The BMW X5 and X6 with a combined sales of more than 16,000 units remained the clear segment leaders in the premium SUV market. In 2009, the BMW X6 had seen a growth of 368% on a year-to-year basis, the BMW 1 Series grew by 153%, and the BMW Z models increased 114%.
Sales of MINI cars increased by 39.4% to 4,368 units in 2009 (prev.yr.: 3,134).
In the entire Greater China sales region including Hong Kong, Taiwan and Macau markets, the BMW Group sold a total of 98,869 BMW and MINI brand automobiles in 2009, representing a year-on-year increase of 31.2 % (prev.yr.: 75,355).
Dr. Christoph Stark, President and CEO of BMW Group Region China said, “We are very happy we can conclude with some great satisfaction that we achieved all our goals for this year, actually over-achieved many of them.” “We saw considerable advances in all areas both in quantity and quality. While maintaining the high growth part in sales and network expansion, we put in a lot of investment and efforts in improving the quality aspects. And, this showed in the greater satisfaction of our customers and dealer partners,” he added.
